Hooking up Las Vegas Company brings Wi-Fi to downtown for race, shoots for more of valley

Apr. 06, 2007

Airliners that touch down in front of Mitchell Gonzalez's front door are loaded with Las Vegas tourists ready to escape the daily grind and connect with Sin City's gambling, eating and partying opportunities.

Gonzalez, president of Cheetah Wireless Technologies, wants to make sure that even amid the haze of casino smoke and din of clanging slot machines the tourists maintain some connection to the outside world, at least as much of it as they can download by laptop computer.

The Brooklyn native who grew up in Puerto Rico is overseeing development of an outdoor wireless network that covers downtown Las Vegas, will soon expand to the Strip and eventually, if Gonzalez plays Cheetah's cards right, could be available throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

On a recent weekday 60 people on the Strip and 35 downtown were logged on to Cheetah's wireless, or Wi-Fi, network. During the International Consumer Electronics Show, there were 505 active accounts. The audience is expected to grow exponentially during the Vegas Grand Prix, which could draw as many as 150,000 fans today through Sunday. Cheetah has agreed to provide free connections during the event, which means anyone with a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop will be able to use the service.

Las Vegas tourist boom draws Wi-Fi options Officials are studying the feasibility of a wireless network for the Strip

March 28, 2007

March 28, 2007 (Computerworld) -- With the lure of 40 million tourists annually and a growing population, the Las Vegas area is also attracting lots of interest in Wi-Fi networks by companies hoping to cash in on the swarms of Internet users looking for high-speed Web access.

Earlier this month, the city of Las Vegas and neighboring Clark County -- where most of the famed Las Vegas Strip casinos and hotels are located -- entered into a consulting agreement with municipal broadband and Wi-Fi consultantancy Civitium LLC (download PDF) for a feasibility study on the creation of a municipal or privately-owned Wi-Fi network covering a large area around the city. Meanwhile, local Internet access provider Cheetah Wireless Technologies Inc. is in the midst of rolling out a large fee-based Wi-Fi network that aims to cover all the hotels and casinos in the city and on the Strip by year's end.

Promoting WiFi with Wireless Wednesdays in Encinitas

March 30, 2007

There is still no such thing as a free lunch, but there is free wireless broadband Internet during lunch. Downtown Encinitas, CA MainStreet Association (DEMA) and Cheetah Wireless Technologies, Inc. (CWTI) are proudly offering “Wireless Wednesdays.” Since last August, DEMA has sponsored free wireless Internet service every Wednesday between 11am and 2pm.

Wireless Wednesdays is focused on the user looking for wireless mobility, creativity and connectivity. “Getting out of the office into a more creative environment enhances productivity,” said Mitch Gonzalez of CWTI. “In 2005, for the first time in history, more laptops were sold than desktops. The reason, mobility and wireless Internet. Users are demanding a less rigid environment and the ability to access Internet throughout their communities. And what better place than Historic Hwy 101 in Downtown Encinitas” added Gonzalez.

Viva Mesh Vegas

January, 2005

A giant neon cowboy beams down at us. It's Vegas Vic, the smiling, smoking, mechanical icon of downtown Las Vegas. I'm sitting in the back seat of an SUV driven by Mitchell Gonzalez, president and founder of Cheetah Wireless Technologies Inc., a small start-up located in a cookie-cutter business park directly opposite Las Vegas's busy McCarran International Airport. I'm surfing the Web at healthy broadband speeds - 1.5 megabits per second or so - as we drive around a 5-square-kilometer patch of the city where Cheetah is adding the finishing touches to a pilot mobile broadband wireless network.

I'm here because this little district of casinos, hotels, wedding chapels, and souvenir stores could be the ground from which the seeds of a telecommunications revolution will grow. Cheetah's mobile network is one of the first municipal installations to use mesh wireless technology, which will allow users to access the Internet anywhere within the coverage area - even if they're driving at 100 kilometers per hour. If the technology is adopted by the City of Las Vegas and other municipalities beyond, it will herald the arrival of a major player in mobile broadband, leapfrogging cellular technologies and next-generation WiMax.

Viva Las Vegas Mesh

August 26, 2004

Las Vegas public safety workers are piloting a six-month trial of mesh networking. Located along a two and a half square mile portion of downtown Las Vegas, the wireless network from MeshNetworks and Cheetah Wireless could expand throughout the city and become a model for the entire state.

The Las Vegas Traffic Engineering Department, along with Metro Police and Fire Services, will use the mesh network to transmit large data files, have remote access to the Emergency Vehicle Preemption system, remotely monitor video cameras at city intersections, maintain communication between field personnel, and allow "instant tactical networking."

Las Vegas Public-Safety Officials to Test Wireless Broadband Network

August 25, 2004

The city of Las Vegas Traffic Engineering Department, city public-safety and city code enforcement agencies are testing a new wireless mesh network that may soon cover the entire Las Vegas metro area. In conjunction with the Freeway and Arterial System of Transportation organization (FAST) of Nevada, the city is piloting the high-speed network for traffic management applications.

Unlike cellular and other mobile broadband technologies, the system being used in Las Vegas offers symmetric uplink and downlink data rates of 512Kbps to 1.5Mbps, and provides "always-on" connectivity, even in a car traveling at speeds over 100mph. The network integrates easily with the city's existing applications, computer systems and core network infrastructure, and the rugged hardware and robust software that makes up the system has been proven to reliably operate in the extreme summer and winter temperatures found in the Las Vegas desert.

Encinitas, California will be offering Wi-Fi throughout its downtown area to residents and visitors starting in September as part of the city's downtown revitalization program.
